Melaka’s Resilience Journey

Melaka is a designated World Heritage City that is fortunate to be free from risks related to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and typhoons. However, in the last several decades the city has undergone radical transformations that are contributing to the city’s increasing vulnerability to shocks such as flooding, water shortages, and disease outbreaks – as well as chronic stresses including traffic congestion, waste management, aging infrastructure, and governance challenges. Some risks are compounded from climate change.

The City of Melaka is ready to plan and tackle some of these challenges, in close collaboration with the city council and Melaka State government. Melaka’s Resilience Strategy combines and builds on these ideas in a holistic plan that will guide the city toward a more resilient future.
