2025 GLOBAL CLIMATE SUMMIT

ABOUT

The University of Oxford is the Academic Partner of the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance, and host of the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit with UN Human Rights.

The University of Oxford is hosting a global summit on climate change and human rights in partnership with the UN Human Rights, with the support of the International Universities Climate Alliance from June 4-7th. The cornerstone of the Right Here Right Now Global Climate Summit will take place on UN World Environment Day (5 June 2025), and be delivered as a 24-hour live global plenary which will roll across the world, passing the baton between co-host universities in different time zones.

The summit will provide an opportunity for world leaders, duty bearers and stakeholders from around the world to discuss climate justice, providing a platform for international cooperation and collaboration. The conference aims to raise the profile of the Right Here, Right Now Human Rights Climate Commitments developed by the UN, University of Colorado Boulder, and subject matter experts from around the world, to bridge academic research and professional practice on climate and human rights, and elevate the voices of people on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

The approach to the summit will also mark a paradigm shift in how international gatherings and global collaboration can thrive while minimizing the carbon footprint of traditional travel. The main event of the summit, the 24-hour global plenary, coordinated by International Universities Climate Alliance, will be co-hosted by the University of Cape Town, University of Colorado Boulder, Monash University, University of Nairobi, University of Oxford, University of São Paulo, University of the South Pacific, UNSW Sydney and more, and will include live and virtual lectures, keynote speeches, and panel discussions. Academic institutions around the world will transform into hubs of climate consciousness, hosting 'watch parties' and local co-host activities, uniting their communities in this historic exchange of ideas.

Alongside the academic plenary delivered on UN World Environment Day, each co-host university is encouraged to deliver a programme of cultural and community events centred on the theme of climate justice. The Right Here Right Now Global Climate Summit will be launched with a celebrity driven social-media campaign expected to reach over 1 billion people, and feature a climate justice photography exhibit, which will be held in coordination with the academic and community events.
